Luring Seabirds Back Home
February 5, 2024
A group in Maui has restored a safe haven for endangered seabirds to come home and nest: it’s completely fenced-off from predators and restored with native plants, but the birds still need some convincing! Seabirds are social animals, after all — they just need to see the hillside populated before they decide to make the trip back home.
The team is using wooden decoy “neighbors” to make it seem as though the enclosure is already populated, as well as audio recordings of seabird calls. At long last, the colony is growing!
