“B-Lines” and Pollinator Corridors
October 30, 2023
Landscapes around the United Kingdom have lost 97% of their wildflowers within the last century, making it difficult for pollinators to safely navigate between the remaining patches. Most species of solitary bee can only travel 300 meters on a single flight, so they require safe areas to land, rest, and recover while continuing their journey.
Ecologist Scarlett Weston is helping to establish “B-Lines” as a solution: these are small sanctuaries of flowers that act as stepping stones for pollinators to move through London and across Britain. Enough small patches of wildflowers can create a corridor for safe passage for pollinators and other wildlife, even in the densest of city landscapes.
