Dangers to Coffee Farmers
September 4, 2023
Would you risk your life for coffee?
Farmers around Mozambique’s Gorongosa National Park were left in dire straits during a 15-year civil war that threatened their safety and their livelihoods. One brave group of women were willing to risk their lives to protect their community… by saving thousands of coffee plants.
Coffee had been planted in Gorongosa as part of a program to restore the watershed of the park that both people and wildlife depend on, but also as a blossoming new economic lifeline. For months during the conflict, these women snuck past patrols to safeguard the coffee saplings and ensure a prosperous future for Gorongosa and its community.
